The only word I can think of is threadbare, but I have no idea if that is strong enough for what you are describing...or if it works in british fanfic. :)

it really has to be a noun, not an adjective. (shmatteh is a noun. :)
and it needs to be just one word. i think tatter would work if it can be used as a noun. i only wonder if it is an unusual enough construction to throw people out of the story for a moment while they try to figure out wtf i am trying to say, though...
