what's a good word for an old rag of a dress? (other than shmatteh, of course. not putting yiddish in the british fanfic. ;)

LOL, shmatteh was the first thing that came to mind! ;)

Sorry, no other ideas...

Tatter? I looked it up, and the word can actually be used as a noun.

The only word I can think of is threadbare, but I have no idea if that is strong enough for what you are describing...or if it works in british fanfic. :)

it really has to be a noun, not an adjective. (shmatteh is a noun. :)

and it needs to be just one word. i think tatter would work if it can be used as a noun. i only wonder if it is an unusual enough construction to throw people out of the story for a moment while they try to figure out wtf i am trying to say, though...

hmm... (wanders off, muttering)

Shift (hey, if it's good enough for Regency romances, it's good enough for you)? Muumuu? Sack? Hand me downs? Good-will? Thread worn rags? Tatters?
